Overview

Barbados will capture your heart with warm hospitality, stunning scenery, unbeatable enthusiasm and refined pleasures. From thick rainforests to the wide open spaces of pristine beaches, Barbados offers a range of environments and corresponding activities. Whether you are in the mood for relaxation, adventure or fun - it′s all here on the island of Barbados, the most south-easterly of all the Caribbean islands.

Culture

Barbados is the only Caribbean island that was governed by only one colonial power, Great Britain. Its influence has given the country the nickname "Little England." English is the official language of Barbados although the Barbadian dialect has strong West African influences. Barbadians are incredibly friendly people and welcome visitors into local bars, restaurants, clubs and festivals.

Cuisine

The Bajan food is a reflection of the wide variety of peoples they have welcomed into their land. An intriguing mixture of Polynesian, French, Greek, Chinese, Italian, Japanese and New World are all available. The Barbadian national dish is coucou and flying fish. Coucou is a recipe which derives from African cuisine and comes in a variety of types. Barbadian cuisine offers a large variety of meats such as rabbit, duck, chicken and lamb - which are usually served fried, curried, pickled or grilled.

Beaches

The lively beach culture of Barbados has a long history. The locals love to spend time on these long stretches of golden sand just as much as the visitors! The west and south coasts are relatively calm, since they face the protected Caribbean Sea. On the eastern shores, the wild Atlantic sends up frothy blasts as waves crash against the exposed coastline. International surfing and windsurfing competitions have taken annual advantage of these conditions for years.

Climate

Out of the Caribbean hurricane path, Barbados is home to temperate year-round temperatures of 28 to 30 degrees C. As the most easterly of the Caribbean islands, the trade winds blowing off of the Atlantic provide a constant gentle breeze.
